The recent unprecedented number of deaths recorded in Kano couldn’t be totally caused by the ravaging Covid – 19 pandemic.
Prof. Isa Abubakar who is the Director, Center for Infectious Diseases at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, attributed three reasons for the high number of deaths recently in Kano State.
The public and community medicine health expert argued that the deceased could be covid 19 patients who were not tested. He reasoned that even in countries with covid 19, the percentage of deaths among infected persons was relatively low.
“These are some people who need treatment for different health challenges, besides covid 19 but the attentions of major hospitals have been shifted to covid 19,” he explained.
According to him, some of the patients might not even have access to the hospitals due to the traffic restrictions declared.
Going further, Prof. Abubakar gave the third reason for the mass death to be that, ” People are now idle at home, and therefore are free to take note of the number of deaths around them. That is why people assume that there is an increasing death rate while there is none at all,” he submitted.
Meanwhile, Mano State Ministry of Health has assured the general public of investigating the matter.
Hadiza Namadi, the spokes person of the Ministry explained that the Commissioner of Health, Aminu Tsanyawa has thrown his weight behind the case, assuring the public that investigation into the matter has begun. He expressed confidence that all the claims would be verified along with the possible causes of the mass deaths.
Commissioner Tsanyawa appealed to the people to continue to observe social distancing, wash their hands regularly, avoid gatherings and to stay at home in order to contain the spread of the covid -19 pandemic.
It will be recalled that about 150 people have allegedly died in Kano four days into the lockdown introduced by the State Government.
