_Sen. Uche Ekwunife Tells President Buhari.
The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District in the Senate, Dr. [Mrs] Uche Ekwunife has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to consider equally enforcing financial, electoral and administrative autonomy to local government councils in the country.
Senator Ekwunife, popularly called Iyom, was reacting to the signing of Executive Order No 10 of 2020 by President Buhari. The signing that into law, Sen. Ekwunife explained, has granted financial autonomy to states’ legislatures and judiciaries.
Hailing the move made by President Buhari, Sen. Ekwunife described it as a step in the right direction for our nation’s democracy to survive.
Sen. Ekwunife who described local government as an important tier of government which should not be subsumed by the state governments, saw the need to make it equally autonomous. She remarked that a vibrant and independent local government administration would quarantee the provision of basic infrastructures such as construction of rural roads, provision of pipe borne water, building of schools and markets in communities within councils’ jurisdiction.
According to her, granting such an autonomy would equally ensure that the local government administration being the a tier of government closest to the people should be directly accountable to the people.
The female Senator appealed the President to support a constitutional amendment that would guarantee parity in government appointments.
