The 25 aggrieved members of the Rivers State House of Assembly are cooking fresh plot to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara. This alarm was raised by the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) secretary, Peter Ameh while speaking at a press briefing in Abuja.
CUPP claimed that it was aware of the alleged plan by the members of the Rivers State House to obtain an ex parte injunction to continue to function as members of the Assembly. Their seats were declared vacant last week for defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on whose platform they were elected to All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to Secretary Ameh, the ex parte application they sought for was to declare that the certificate of returns of the defecting members “cannot be withdrawn by the Independent Nation Electoral Commission (INEC), even when those acts have been completed and also a declaration that the former House of Assembly members should continue to function.
“Consequentially, the move to secure an order for the Nigerian Police to continue to protect these culprits as members would have its adverse effect..We are lovers of democracy and we do no wish any negative happens to our rather nascent democracy.”
Secretary Ameh urged the judiciary to reject the ex parte applications and safeguard the country. He also charged security agencies to remain apolitical and to “ensure that the institutions of government, especially the Rivers State Government is protected,” Ameh said, denouncing the alleged plot.
