The President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will on Sunday, 11 February, 2024, attend the 2023 African Cup of Nations final.

The AFCON final which will hold at the Alassanne Ouattara Stadium, Ebimpe, Abidjan, on Sunday, is between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Elephants of Ivory Coast.

The President of the Confederation of African Football Federations, CAF, Patrice Motsepe, disclose this during his press conference on Friday at the Palace de la Culture in Trechville, Abidjan.

The CAF President stated in answering questions at the Palace de la Culture in Trechville, Abidjan that Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu, would be attending the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final.

In answering the question when could Africa host the World Cup again, the South African business mogul replied: “Nigeria must put in a bid. The Nigerian president (Bola Tinubu) is coming to watch the final on Sunday. I will have a conversation with him about it.”

It would be recalled that Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima was in attendance when the Super Eagles defeated South Africa 4-2 on penalties in the semi-finals on Wednesday.
The Sunday encounter will kick off at 9 pm Nigerian time. The Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 Nigeria’s presidential election, Mr. Peter Obi, was also in the stadium to cheer up the Super Eagles to victory

President Tinubu has demonstrated interest in the encouraging performance of the Super Eagles in the tournament. From his “resting place” in France, Tinubu put across a video call to the Super Eagles ahead of their match against Angola which Nigeria won by 1-0.

His son, Seyi Tinubu, shared the video of the moment on his Instagram. Captioned, “Mr President #officialasiwajubat encouraging the team ahead of the AFCON quarter-final match with Angola,” Seyi noted that the president called to motivate the team ahead of their quarter-final encounter in the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023.

The Super Eagles advanced from the semi-finals after defeating South Africa 4-2 in a thrilling penalty shootout while tournament hosts Cote d’Ivoire booked their place in the showpiece game after edging DR Congo 1-0 on Wednesday night.
