The renowned Igbo highlife music legend, Mike Ejeagha, has passed on.

He died on Friday, 6th June,2025, around 8: 00 pm in the night at the 32 Garrison Hospital, Enugu, Enugu State, at the age of 95. He had been sick for a long time.

His eldest son, Mr Emma Ejeagha, allegedly confirmed the sad news to Vanguard newspaper in a telephone conversation.

The late Gentleman Mike Ejeagha, as he was fondly called around Southeast, was known for transforming Igbo folklore and proverbs into captivating music as he used to feature every Sunday evening in NTA Enugu in the 80s telling folklore through his music.

His song story on how tortoise sold off an elephant, Gwo-gwo-mgwo’ was made an evergreen trending dance nationwide and beyond by a renowned skit maker cum comedian called Brain Jotter. The young gifted content creator reinvented the song and succeeded in making it one of the most sought after in the Internet for months.

The late Ejeagha used his music, like musicians of the old, to advise young ones on how to live in order to get best in life. In the song, he counseled that it is better to be picking his wealth bit by bit like palm wine drops instead of rushing like wine from raffia palm. He emphasized that wealth at the evening of one’s life is the best. As if he prophesized on his life, Blain Jotter made him a millionaire at his old age, just as Davido lifted up Bright Chimezie, Okoro Junior.
