Ukpor community in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, southeast Nigeria has elected Hon. Barrister Ikenna Amechi as her President General of Ukpor Improvement Union (U.I.U)
In the keenly contested election, Barr Amechi got 160 votes out of 232 votes cast by the delegates, while Chief Kanayo C. Chukwumezie got the remaining 72 votes.
Others elected were Nkwado Onwughalu as the first Vice President while Bartholomew Okechukwu was elected as the second Vice President. Chidiebere Orjika was elected as the Secretary General.
Anambra State Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Local government Affairs, Hon Tonycollins C. Nwabunwanne sent representatives from his ministry to witness the election which was peacefully but hotly contested. Chairman of Nnewi South Local Government Area, Chief Chinedu Ezeogidi was around to witness the election
In his acceptance speech, Hon. Barr Amechi who first of all congratulated his opponent for a dogged fight and for his wisdom to approach the court instead of resorting to self help, invited him to join him with his sterling ideas to move the town forward.
He conveyed his warm gratitude to the Government of Anambra State and appreciated the Chairman of Nnewi South Local Govt for his sacrifice, guide and presence during the election. Thanking electoral committee chairman, Chief Amobi Akaegbobi (Akomajideaku Ukpor), and his team in conducting the election, Amechi promised Ukpor community that he would not renege on his campaign promises.
Meanwhile, the Minority Leader Anambra State House of Assembly and Member Representing Nnewi South Constituency II, Rt. Hon. Johnbosco Akaegbobi has sent his heartiest congratulations to the U.I.U PG-elect, Barr. Ikenna Amechi (Agbanwodikeizu) on being the newly elected President General of the Ukpor Improvement Union.
Hon. Akaegbobi expressed confidence that the new PG-elect and his seasoned executives will usher in a new wave of developmental strides to Ukpor town and her people!
”Ndị Ukpor can only expect nothing but inspired and enlightened leadership from the Ikenna Amechi led administration,” he said and urged the newly elected executives to carry every member along in other to foster unity and much development in their dear town.
He prayed that Ukpor would experience much progress under Barr Amaechi leadership.
IkennaMbazulike Amechi is the son of the first Aviation Minister in the country, Dara Mbazulike Amechi, then popularly called the Boy is Good during the reign of Hon. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. The newly Ukpor PG-elect is a legal luminary, philanthropist and social justice crusader. He was a member representing Nnewi South Constituency 2 during the regime of Peter Obi as governor of Anambra State.
He is the Principal Counsel in the Perimeter Associates Chambers and former Chairman, House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, Anambra State House of Assembly when Peter Obi was the governor.
